Lemme Get This Straight

A quick summary of the values upheld by the GOP lately say the following:

  • We don’t provide contraceptives (and I’m guessing education about them goes out the window too)
  • We don’t allow for abortions of any kind. So, if someone ends up pregnant because she couldn’t get contraception, she MUST have it.
  • We don’t allow for maternity care. So if she’s having a baby it’s at her own financial peril and likely damaging the health of the baby as mom will reduce doctor visits to save money.
  • We don’t allow for post-birth family leave. Probably best since mom will likely have a 20k bill to pay.
  • We don’t allow for life-giving support after a baby is born (early education, food stamps etc)
  • If that baby was born C-Section, mom can’t get reasonably priced insurance anymore because ya know – that 40 week “disease” of being pregnant was a pre-existing condition, likely leading to a much less healthy mom. Kids love that.
  • Any domestic violence or rape in her past also makes her have to pay extra for her insurance. So if that baby the GOP made her have was conceived out of rape she’s penalized forever and in every way possible.

GOP – if you EVER again claim to be pro-life to my face you might have a lot of explaining to do for NONE of this supports loving healthy life. I have NEVER seen something so overtly woman hating. I am disgusted.

Ladies – listen up.

Don’t let anyone else shape your story. Fix your eyes forward and run toward what you want. They can fight you. They can resist you but they can’t stop you if you don’t want them to. Run on ladies.

I’m running for office!

Long before the November election I was considering running for school board. But since I’ve seen stalwarts of our society threatened by the current political atmosphere I felt even more called to serve.

So here we are – just about a month til the primary in Western PA and I’m on the ballot!

A witness to the horror

A few nights ago I started rewatching Braveheart. When this movie came out I LOVED IT. The sweeping epic story of love, country and freedom. I knew the facts were loose, but I didn’t care. It’s filed away in my brain along with other sweeping epics like Legends of the Fall.

My complicated feelings about Mel Gibson has kept me away from re-watching this movie. But I gave it a whirl.  And yes, the scene where he whips his troops into patriotic frenzy declaring “they’ll never take our FREEDOM!” was still stirring.

But man the violence in this movie is no joke. The battle scenes were brutal. To be a soldier in the 1300’s was pretty crappy! Watching the execution scene hit me tho. It always does tho when you see human execution as sport complete with two little people acting as an opening act. It lead me to ask – could I ever watch a public execution? It was the norm at the time so while it SEEMS insane to think about watching a human being die in front of our very eyes and just watch and shake out heads the way William Wallace’s allies do in the crowd at his execution.

Then – out came the footage of Syrian citizens choking to death on gas raining down on them by their own government. I shook my head. I might have tweeted something about it. Then I got back to making dinner.

I watched a public execution yesterday. And I did nothing.

Dear Republicans,

PLEASE WORKTOGETHER!Hi guys! Boy you’re having quite a few months eh? Total blinding government control is actually pretty exciting. You feel, I suspect, like you can finally affect change – get something DONE! The immediate resistance, pushback and flooding of phone banks must have been insane.

I mean – phones so jammed no one can get thru for weeks. The few actually holding Town Halls are getting screamed at. Frankly I don’t blame you for not wanting to host one (though you really have to – it’s your job).

Here’s the deal tho. I beg of you – restraint. Remember how for the last 8 years you kept saying “but this is all being shoved down our throats, we don’t want this!” it seems what’s happening here is the political equivalent of hazing the freshman pledge. You hated it when it was done to you but too damn bad – it’s their turn now.

No, I don’t expect that “do what is fair and decent” will be a compelling argument, but perhaps this will be. As we sit on the precipice of you voting to change the rules of Senate governance to avoid the filibuster I truly fear for what that implication could mean.

What makes the Senate so special is that for the big stuff, you HAVE to work together. This is BRILLIANT. This means that despite our RAGING differences that consensus must be reached and common ground sought. When you move away from that to “screw it, I just need 51 and the other guy loses, I win” well guess who actually wins. No one. Guess who loses? Everyone.

You then in effect turn in the senate into the pendulum swinging undoing everything the “guy who came before you” did. So every 4 or 8 years the senate can undo or re-do something, or just re-writing the rules ignoring the Senate Parliamentarian if you don’t like how things are going to go all while leaving the American Citizens with an unstable divided government. You don’t need me to tell you what happens to unstable governments.

To quote Mitch McConnell in 2013 “How many times have we been threatened by colleagues? Do what I say or we’ll break the rules to change the rules. Confirm everybody 100%; anything less than that is obstructionism. That’s what they are saying to effect. Well let me say we aren’t interested in have a gun put to our heads” Except at that time he was railing against the majority Democrats who didn’t want Republicans to filibuster cabinet appointments. Well republicans. Draw down your weapons. Remember after all that you can be the true heroes and leaders that take us out of this divided and angry rhetoric and return to common ground, decency, collegiality, negotiation and consensus.

Also, that nuclear option works both ways. You may one day regret having voted for it.

Dear Democrats,

I am not a member of your party but I saw something last week that you need to pay attention to. I know – you’re on defcon-10 right now. What more can you handle? Well, I ask you to shine a mirror on yourself right now and assess yourselves honestly.

The “defeat” of the AHCA is a REALLY important moment. (Tho technically not a defeat as it never went to vote, but I digress) The ACA lives, yay! Right? Hooray! Everyone is happy! But pump those brakes really quick. What happened to the Republicans was not a failure of want or desire. It was not a “victory for citizens”. It was the result of a protest without purpose.

It’s SUPER EASY to be the resistance.  Make a sign. March. Resist. Vote No. Say No. Every time. No matter what they say – just say NO as loud as possible back. This plan means you don’t need to hear them or listen or consider. Frankly it’s kind of fun. I’ve been doing a bit of it myself lately. JUST SAY NO to whatever 45 says, or thinks, or wants. That’s what the GOP has been doing with regards to the ACA. Fight, Sue, Repeal, NO! But what happens when they get their moment – EVERYTHING is on their side. The stage is set. The curtains draw and outcomes Speaker Ryan with his sleeves rolled up and some charts (all “hard work happenin’-like”) and he lays an egg. A big fat egg.

There was no plan. There was no consensus built among his OWN party for what they wanted. They just “didn’t want the ACA”. I would venture they didn’t want it mainly because of the nickname “Obamacare” and they simply couldn’t have that. (remember? RESIST! NO!) They just knew they didn’t want whatever it was.

Don’t forget too – that there are people who have insurance thru the ACA and would happily give it back, happily go back to the risky life sans-insurance. There are people whose premiums are SKYROCKETING to a point where the family budget is in real trouble. So this isn’t a validation of the ACA. When the CBO shouts about the number of people who would lose their insurance, there are a measurable number of those who WANT to lose their insurance. (and yes there are also a measurable number who don’t know the ACA and Obamacare are the same thing . . .I know.)

But here’s the deal – what failed the Republicans was their lack of common goal, built on shared vision and truly designed plan. Whatever may come of the 45th’s administration that may royally fry your cheese don’t be fooled into thinking that simply resisting is enough. What is happening to the GOP right now is a cautionary tale. Work together. Remain focused. Unite. It’s your only hope when the stage is set for YOU to roll your sleeves up and present.

The little ones are watching. And listening.

With two young girls I am constantly aware of anything I say about my size, weight, hair, skin, make up etc. Anything I say will shoot to their hearts as second-hand judgement. Whether they realize its damage at the moment or not until years later it’s no less harmful than growing up in a smoker’s home.

The universe will hand them plenty of reasons to dislike themselves. I refuse to let any of those reasons come from my mouth.

Little ones you are good and valuable and important. Your shirt size, haircut and make up have nothing to do with it.
